NJPEC Presents Package of the Year Awards

Recognition ranges across a number of categories.

A fragrance bottle shone as the celebrated Package of the Year at the New Jersey Packaging Executives’ (NJPEC’s) 32nd Annual Package of the Year Awards, held November 11 at the Parsippany Hilton in New Jersey. Essence by Narciso Rodriguez, marketed by Shiseido, also received the Gold Award in the Fragrance category. The entry was submitted by SGD North America, Inc., which manufactured the “sterling” glass flask bottle.

Sheherazade Chamlou, vice president of sales and marketing, SGD, says the bottle for Essence by Narciso Rodriguez “has taken this year’s trends of creativity, innovation, iconicism, quality and luxury to a new level, a ‘collectible’ level.” By keeping in mind Narciso Rodriguez’s inspirations from his fashions to his fragrance scents, she says that SGD was able to create a bottle “that perfectly accompanies his points of view, encompassing cool minimalism, streamlined designs, all while being sleek and chic, intense and ethereal, even simple and complex, with a pure quality of sunlight.”

Chamlou says that additional inspiration emanated from the interior painting of antique Chinese bottles. SGD used an internal silver mirror effect to create the illusion that the fragrance is suspended within the bottle. “While such materials are harder to work with” she says, “it results in a clean and warm mirror effect, which is surprisingly not achieved by either a metallization or a lacquering, but by a deposit of silver coating inside the bottle.”

The coating inside the bottle is completely resistant and compatible with the fragrance itself, a goal that had “yet to be obtained before now,” according to Chamlou.

Prior to the dinner and awards presentation, entries were on display for all to see.

Scott Widro, vice president of manufacturing and materials management, Chanel USA, provided the introduction for the guest speaker of the evening—Lyle Saunders, VP for creative services, Chanel USA. Saunders treated guests to a look at 90 years of successful packaging for the brand, which, today, continues to use the same iconic colors and shapes, including the octagon, a favorite of Coco Chanel for its resemblance to the Place Vendôme in Paris.

Following is a list of additional awards presented in the Beauty/Personal Care categories. (Additional awards were given in the Food and Beverage, Household/Industrial, Baby/Child and Promotional categories.)
